The Equilibre program is a multidisciplinary therapy program for children with obesity at the pediatric medical center La Maisonnée, started 1999. The purpose of this study was to established a correlation between childhood obesity and sleep disordered breathing using systematic polygraph studies coupled with transcutaneous capnography. 67/94 children included in the Equilibre program underwent a sleep study over a 1 year period. 26 studies were considered abnormal, 24 with an AHI>5, 5 children have been placed on CPAP, 21 children were sent to the ENT physician. The systematic use of sleep studies has shown sleep disordered breathing( ENT or OSA) in 50% of obese children. This study is now routinely incorporated at our facility. The follow up at one year is currently being done and the results should show us the impact of weight loss on sleep quality.
