Chaîne de transfert d'électrons depuis le NADH ou le FADH2 jusqu'à l'oxygène qui est ainsi réduit en eau, organisée en complexes comportant des cytochromes et des flavoprotéines, localisée dans la membrane interne des mitochondries. L'énergie libérée par la chaîne respiratoire permet la formation d'un gradient de protons utilisé pour produire de l'ATP dans la phosphorylation oxydative. (10/08/2005)
