Community-based monitoring of physical activity can be done with the objective of assessing baseline activity and compare to population based means, to measure the impact of an intervention or to provide direct feedback to certain populations at risk for developing higher complications from sedentary habits. Although the use of pedometers have been studied mainly in the healthy population, there is an increasing body of literature on the use of activity monitoring in neuromuscular patients, both as a description of their disability and as measure of different interventions. In this lecture, we will cover the use of community-based step activity monitoring as a developing outcome measure for clinical trials to assess the value of therapeutic interventions in neuromuscular diseases. The focus will be mainly in the application of such tools to clinical trials in Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients, their advantages, disadvantages and limitations, as well as validation procedures.
