Introduction: Quality of life (QoL), health related quality of life (HRQoL) and perceived health measures are broadly explored. To understand definitely these measurements, we offer to remind you of basic concepts. Method: Pubmed search with key words ' quality of life ', ' health status ', ' health related quality of life ', ' concept formation '. Results: It is necessary to understand what the researchers aim to determine. There are two different ways of understanding the common term QoL: to reach the experience of ultimate positive life, is it necessary to have one's dream come true or to provide for one's needs ? The term QoL is the common denominator for all positive aspects of the domains of life in human existence. It is the most representative and progressive, broadest concept of the qualitative aspect of life. HRQoL refers to a more specific notion of QoL. Indeed, many notions interfere with QoL, health being a part of QoL : 'Health is not only the absence of illness or disability, but also the expression of social, physical and psychological wellbeing '. The definition of health is not very distant from subjective wellbeing because this condition is necessary to drive a good health. Health can be determined by three attributes: real morbidity, objective morbidity and subjective morbidity. These three dimensions overlap one another. The biomedical model differentiate the objective measures from those subjective. Nevertheless, perceptible measurements bring further and useful information about the different domains of health. Conclusion: Since the measurements of QoL, HRQol, perceived health or symptoms have in common to be based on the patient's point of view, it was offered to use an other term : ' patient reported outcome '. There are several reasons to be interested in subjective measurements. Firstly, scientific or professional comprehension of health has nothing to do with the patient's opinion. Secondly, these measurements are a manner of taking into account the patient's point of view. Thirdly, these subjective measurements have prognostic qualities particularly interesting compared to objective measurements.
